I think I’ve found my new favorite restaurant. Seriously guys, this place is a health-nut’s DREAM. Modmarket opened on the corner of 75 and Walnut Hill in February and I had been dying to check it out since I spotted it across from the newest Traders Joes a few months ago. It wasn’t until I saw their calorie conscious menu and that their motto is “We believe a diet of simple, whole foods is key to a happy, healthy life,” that I knew I had to stop by. After spending a total of $8, eating a total of 500 calories, and feeling totally and completely satisfied with my delicious experience did I realize that this is the restaurant I’ve been waiting for my entire life. Losing weight is a very difficult thing to do if you don’t know how! There are SO many diet fads out there: Paleo, vegan, gluten-free, Atkins, etc. Everyone is different and one might work for you over others. The reason I was so successful my first year of weight loss was thanks to the Jenny Craig diet program! I was in college and having a weeks worth of food shipped to me already packaged, measured, and calorie counted was the easiest way for me to quickly begin eating healthy without much thought. Not everyone has the luxury of being able to be on a program like that, in fact, I had a hard time figuring out what kind of food and how much of it I should be eating after I stopped eating Jenny Craig meals. Luckily, Jenny Craig did teach me one thing very important to losing weight: PORTION CONTROL.
The next stop on my journey to find healthy ways to eat out around Dallas brings me to one of my favorite hole-in-the-wall restaurants that you’ve probably driven past a million times. Offshore’s Nextdoor is located on the corner of Walnut Hill and Audelia and for not being very well known, they have some of the best sea food and ambiance I’ve seen for SUCH an incredible price! Stop by next time you’re in the area to check out their Paleo menu, awesome craft beers on tap, and the best ahi tuna burger I’ve ever had for only $10.95! Continue reading
It’s officially been one year since we picked this crazy pup up at the SPCA in Dallas. I’m not quite sure what got into Justin and me when we decided it was time to adopt a dog, but one rainy Sunday morning we visited 4 different shelters looking for our new best friend. What we saw and experienced over the next few months was more than either of us knew to expect when we brought home our very sick and abused 2 year-old lab/australian shepherd/collie mix from the shelter. These are the reasons why rescuing a pet is one of the most important things I have done in my life and why you should consider rescuing if you’re thinking about getting a dog anytime soon! For the most part, I’m a big believer in smoothies for breakfast. They’re packed with a ton of healthy fruits and veggies and really provide a great start to your day. But, occasionally I wake up on the weekend and all I want is coffee and something loaded with carbs and sugar. We all have our flaws; I’m only human y’all. I’ve started making healthy baked goods over the weekend to have them around as treats throughout the week and it kind of feels like I’m cheating when I reach for a muffin at 3 in the afternoon. This recipe is packed with healthy carbs, protein, and natural sweeteners with plenty of fruity, spring time flavors to brighten up your day!

Before I started losing weight, snacking was my worst enemy. Throughout school, I learned a very depressing fact about myself…..I am a stress eater. I know, it’s terrible. If I was cramming for an exam, waiting for news, watching TV, or upset about something sitting in my apartment I would always have a craving to go to the snack cabinet and grab something to eat to take my mind off of it. The only thing that stopped me from snacking when I began my weight loss journey was not having unhealthy snacks around the house. If they weren’t around, I couldn’t eat them! But, it’s important to keep healthy snacks around when you are craving a little something. Here is a list of my favorite healthy snacks for those munchie moments.

Anytime I’m feeling a bit gross, run down, or bloated it’s typically due to the food I’ve been eating, especially after a vacation! I was in major need of a cleanse this week and turned to Suja’s 3-day fresh start juice cleanse from Costco. I have seen this little box at Costco before for only $30, and once I decided to try it, it was already gone from the store! They go quickly so when I saw them on the shelves over the weekend, I scooped one up immediately! Don’t worry though if you don’t have a Costco membership, they sell a different Suja juice cleanse at Target as well if you’re interested in their products! After 3 days, I’ve lost 1.5 lbs and feel lighter and ready for the weekend. Here’s my recap of the meals, juices, and experience!

I LOVE VACATIONS. There’s something about packing your favorite outfits and getting up early to eat breakfast at the airport before flying to a new city that makes me so giddy and excited. So, when my little brother got a lead in his college’s musical in North Carolina, I couldn’t turn down the opportunity to take a little trip. We received so many recommendations of what to do while we were there from friends and family, but we ended up completely winging it due to two days worth of rain. It was such a relaxing and beautiful little trip full of very indulgent food, a self-serve beer tap, a huge flea market, and a bad ass rental car. Continue reading

Let’s all be honest with ourselves, the best part about Dallas is the food. The only thing any of us ever plan, or look forward to, is going out to brunch for bottomless mimosas or happy hour to get chips and salsa with a margarita on the side. Moving to lower Greenville turned my restaurant outings into a very regular occasion, especially now that it’s patio weather. All of the extra calories one can consume in a normal serving at a restaurant can be problematic though. I’ve made it my goal to do some research, dig up a little dirt on these popular restaurants, and figure out who actually has healthy options for those of us not looking to pack on the extra lbs. I’m coming close to approaching the two year mark since I graduated from Indiana University and I’ve made an effort to revisit my college campus at least once a year since I’ve left. It’s filled with so many incredible memories that fill my heart with joy the second I drive back into town. It also helped that it was seventy degrees there this past weekend with a blue sky, big white puffy clouds, and a sun that wouldn’t stop shining! Continue reading
